Nuclear: News–India & Africa

 

African Governments are checking out nuclear power as an option to tide over the massive power shortage. South Africa is already committed to nuclear energy. Kenya is looking for sites along its coast to start generating nuclear energy by 2020.

India races to its target of 20,000 MW of nuclear power by 2020 and an even more ambitious target of 63,000 MW by 2032. Current operational capacity is 4780 MW.

A deal to buy reactors from the French firm Areva is in place. Two other reactors are being set up by the Russians to be commissioned in 2011. India’s indigenous nuclear program setting up eight new units using its own heavy water reactor technology.

India’s massive nuclear power operation.

India has signed big deals with Areva and Russia for a massive thrust in producing power through nuclear plants. Some Indian companies like L&T, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), Godrej, Walchandnagar Industries , have already latched on to the opportunity and signed agreement with NPCL India.
