China-based metal valve manufacturer China Valves Technology has secured a $15 million order for pumped storage ball valves and hydraulic turbine pumped storage inlet valves from Chinese power station contractor Dongfang Electric, media reports indicate.

Toshiba is considering establishing bases for production and sales of hydroelectric generation equipment in India and Brazil, according to a company official. It has not determined the level of investment. Toshiba is the largest Japanese hydroelectric equipment producer and has been expanding its international business in China and other countries.

Thailand thanked the World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other financial institutions and development agencies who have made the 1,070 MW Nam Theun 2 power station possible. The project has been launched that costs around US$1.3 billion.

Egypt plans to set up a JV to generate 1700MW of hydroelectric in Uganda. The JV would fund the generation of 1000MW with an Egyptian company interested in financing an additional 700MW. The newspapers said an Egyptian hydropower company could build three hydroelectric plants, representing a US$100m investment. It could be Electricity Holding Company

Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania signed a new deal in May that would reduce Egypt’s 55.5bnm3 share of around 84bnm3 of Nile water. The signatories have given other Nile basin countries one year to join the treaty before implementing it. However, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi have refused to sign it to date while Sudan supports Egypt’s position.
