WIND & HYDRO: L&T Plans big play…

L&T is going in for a major change in its energy business focus. The country’s largest private engineering company, which is mainly identified with large, thermal-fired power projects — virtually almost every power plant in India was built by L&T — is going green by venturing into wind and hydro power generation.
The Mumbai-based company has prepared a road map for building wind power projects in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu for captive use. In addition, it is also investing around US$2 billion for setting up 800 MW of hydro power projects in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.

L&T is also to invest in about 5000 MW thermal power capacity based on super-critical technology. The engineering conglomerate is also in the process of bidding several hydro power projects in the hill states of the country and in neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Bhutan.

The company has opted for wind energy for compensating its captive usage. It has placed its first wind energy order Suzlon for a 8.7-MW wind energy project in Tamil Nadu. (L&T itself makes castings and forgings, and practically all the electrical and electronic control equipment for wind, thermal, hydro, nuclear and defence). Similarly, the group will also build other wind projects in Maharashtra and Gujarat, where most of the group facilities are located.
