India's largest engineering and construction conglomerate, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) expects the nuclear business to contribute US Dollar 1.6 billion in the next five years.
L&T, has been supplying equipment to India's nuclear power stations for over 40 years. It has now created one of the biggest manufacturing facilities at Hazira (coastal town in West India), capable of manufacturing nuclear reactors that can produce more than 4000 MW of nuclear power every year.
L&T is ready to take up turnkey execution of nuclear power plant projects. It has entered into tie-ups with four of the five top global suppliers of nuclear reactors.
Nuclear power plants in India are not being set up on turnkey basis. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India procures individual items for setting up of a nuclear power station. But L&T is ready up to execute nuclear projects on turnkey basis.
The MOU executed by L&T are with GE-Hitachi (for up to 1350 MW advanced reactors), Westinghouse (1000 MW sets), Atomic Energy of Canada (up to 1200 MW sets) and with ASC of Russia (for 1000 MW sets). L&T is also in talks with Areva (for 1,650 MW sets). It will also approach Mitsubishi for 1750 MW plus reactors.
