POWER: Hardware Changes–Blow to BHEL

Indian Bharat Forge (Photos) and Alstom France are the lowest bidders and receive the biggest chunk of equipment supply for the US Dollar 2billion global tender of NTPC’s thermal power plant. The job is for supply of 11 machines of 660MW each super critical generating equipment. BF+A JV gets five machines. They were the lowest bidders. BHEL will get 4 machines and 2 will go to Toshiba+JSW JV if they can match the prices. Pre-requisites to bid for the bulk tender was that the company or JV must have a manufacturing base in India.

This is a major change in the Indian power sector equipment supply. Their price has edged out Chinese prices from Shanghai Electric Group Co. Ltd, DongFang Electric Corp. and Harbin Power Equipment Co. Ltd. Also in the race was Russia’s Power Machines.

NTPC disqualified joint-venture of L&T, India and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI). They have gone to court. However, NTPC will go ahead with the award of the contract in about four weeks time.
